Recovering Funds from Coinbase and MetaMask: A Realistic Guide

What can — and cannot — be done when stolen funds pass through Coinbase or self-custodial wallets like MetaMask.

CrimeJustice Investigations

Custodial vs self-custodial: the single most important distinction

Coinbase is a custodial exchange. It holds the keys to user funds, runs KYC on its account holders, and responds to law enforcement requests. MetaMask is self-custodial. It is a browser wallet. There is no company holding the funds, no support desk that can reverse a transaction, and no account to freeze.

This distinction shapes everything about what recovery looks like.

When funds pass through Coinbase

If stolen funds land in a Coinbase-controlled address, there is a credible path: a police report, a preservation request, and — if the funds are still there — a freeze. We have seen funds frozen within hours when the report is detailed and the transaction is fresh.

What you need on hand:

  • The outgoing transaction hash
  • The receiving address (we confirm it is Coinbase-clustered before you escalate)
  • A police case number
  • Counsel willing to send a preservation letter

When funds land in a MetaMask wallet

A MetaMask address is just a key pair. No company can freeze it. Recovery in this case depends on the funds eventually moving somewhere custodial — a centralized exchange, a regulated bridge, a fiat off-ramp. Our job is to watch and to map the cluster around that wallet until that happens.

This is patient work. It is also the work most often abandoned by victims who were told, incorrectly, that "nothing can be done" with self-custodial wallets.

Recovery scams: the second wound

If anyone — on social media, by cold email, on a forum — promises guaranteed recovery for an upfront fee, walk away. Legitimate investigators do not promise recovery. We promise a feasibility assessment, a defined scope of work, and an honest answer about your odds.
