Spotting a Romance Scam Before It Costs You

Romance scams now cost victims more than any other consumer fraud. Here are the patterns we see in every case file.

The pattern is older than the internet

Romance scams are not new. What is new is the scale, the playbook, and the way crypto has replaced wire transfers as the preferred exfiltration channel. The mechanics rhyme across nearly every case we see.

Common signals

  • The relationship moves fast. Within days you are exchanging "I love you", planning a future, and being told they have never felt this way before.
  • They cannot video call. There is always a reason — bad connection, oil rig, deployed overseas, hospital, custody dispute.
  • A crisis appears. A medical bill, a frozen account, a customs fee, a tax payment to unlock a trading profit. The amount starts small and grows.
  • You are introduced to an "investment". A platform with a slick dashboard, real-looking returns, and a "mentor" who walks you through your first deposit. Withdrawals work at first. Then they do not.
  • The pressure escalates. When you hesitate, the affection or the urgency intensifies. Both are tools.

What to do if you recognize yourself in this

Stop sending money today. Do not warn the other person — preserve the chats, the platform URLs, the wallet addresses, the transaction hashes exactly as they are. Then talk to someone trained to look at this objectively. Family is often too close to the situation; an investigator is not.
